According to a latest improvement in the field of science and
technology it has been heard of that the US Food and Drug Administration which
is also known as FDA has approved a
prosthetic arm with all sort of capabilities which were long dreamed of in
science fiction, whether it be Star Wars, Transformers or the ultimate Terminator. The designers of this prosthetic arm claim that the DEKA’s Sci-Fi
Style Prosthetic Arm almost gives the
near natural control which enhances independence, not just that but it also improves
the quality of life for amputees making them feel much better.
This
prosthetic arm is officially known as the DEKA Arm System, and is developed by
a company called DEKA Integrated Solutions in Manchester, New Hampshire.
This arm uses wireless signals from sensors which lie in the user's feet and
other inputs to control the multiple joints of affected arms. The DEKA’s Sci-Fi Style Prosthetic Arm has been designed in a way that it is
almost of the same size and weight as a natural limb the only major difference
being the fact that it is battery-powered. The patient has been given the
option to choose any one among six different grips available.
Although
the arm's development would not have been possible without having technological
advancements, including computer controls, sensors, manufacturing that uses
lightweight but strong materials and also the use of small power motors.
It is a very
obvious fact that despite the tremendous benefits DEKA’s
Sci-Fi Style Prosthetic Arm
has and the ease it provides no one will describe this piece of technology as
having the full capacity of an intact arm. Dr. Geoffrey Ling after having seen a
lot of people specially soldiers with lost limbs while working in combat
hospitals of Iraq and Afghanistan finally decided that the time had come to
introduces something like Luke Skywalker near the end of Star wars to help
bring some relief for the ones in need. It was the year 2006 when Dr. Ling
launched the concept of the amazing prosthetic’s program at the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency also known as DARPA. Although work on this program
had started in the year 2006 but still, the DEKA’s
Sci-Fi Style Prosthetic Arm
took almost eight years to win approval to be released commercially.
As far as the
announcement is concerned it did not just come out of nowhere. The test version
of the DEKA’s Sci-Fi Style Prosthetic Arm has already been fitted to 36 people.
But because for the marketing purposes this project required FDA’s approval.
This arm along with numerous other features also allows users to brush their
hair, operate a lock and also the chance to eat and prepare food. Dr. Ling's
prosthetic arm is officially named as Gen-3 Arm System but it has also been
given the nick name of Luke Skywalker after the famous Star war 5.
The experts at DARPA
are by far the only ones who are chasing the dream of restoring full
functionality for millions of amputees.
This DEKA’s Sci-Fi Style Prosthetic Arm system is capable of handling
delicate objects such as eggs and grapes and will also be capable of
manipulating certain power tools such as a hand drill.
